BUZEK Jerzy – President of the European Parliament Jerzy Buzek is the president of the European Parliament since July 2009. When Buzek was elected to the European Parliament in 2004, he got the best result in Poland. Since then, he has been an active MEP. The positions he has held include vice-president of the European Energy Forum, as well as rapporteur for both the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and the European Strategic Energy Technology Plan. As an MEP, he has worn a number of prizes, such as Best Polish MEP and the Parliament Magazine’sBest MEP in the science and technology category.
 
Before becoming an MEP, Buzek was the prime minister of Poland (1997-2001). During his time as premier, he launched accession talks with the EU and led Poland’s NATO negotiations. Buzek’s political career began in the 1980s when he became a prominent member of the Solidarity (Solidarność) pro-democracy trade unions movement.

Buzek is an engineer by training and, before becoming prime minister, worked as a scientist at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is the author of approximately 200 research papers and patents.
