The Global Index Insurance Facility (GIIF) has facilitated more than 1.5 million contracts, covering approximately 6 million people, with U$151 milion in insured funds. With the objective of providing access to finance to smallholder farmers and helping them build resilience against climate risks, GIIF works with a set of private sector stakeholders including (re)-insurers, financial institutions, and cooperatives. Nevertheless, raising awareness and building financial literacy remains critical to increasing penetration in many countries and regional risk retention and skills development must be strengthened. In this session, the panel is discussing the relationship between index insurance and resilience; actors' contributions to this risk management tool; and the expected role of regional organisations.
