Better Migration Management in the Horn of Africa – A regional response to a regional challenge

Better Migration Management in the Horn of Africa – A regional response to a regional challenge

A platform for African nations to jointly address the challenges resulting from mixed migration in the Horn of Africa

The Horn of Africa region is characterised by complex mixed migration flows through both regular and irregular channels. With 6.9 million internally displaced persons and the largest number of refugees in Africa, its population is particularly prone to fall victim of organised human trafficking and smuggling networks, and to suffer human rights abuses at their hands. Therefore, the BMM programme aims at improving migration management in the region, particularly addressing the trafficking and smuggling of migrants, enhancing the protection of victims of trafficking and smuggling, and raising awareness about the dangers of irregular migration and the alternatives to it.
